New data released by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) estimates that approximately 20,800 Australian women and 150 Australian men were living with metastatic breast cancer in 2024, including approximately 2,000 people in Western Australia. This is the first national estimate of its kind and provides crucial insight into a community that has historically been difficult to accurately measure.

Metastatic breast cancer, also known as advanced or stage IV breast cancer, occurs when cancer spreads beyond the breast and nearby lymph nodes to other parts of the body, commonly the bones, liver, lungs or brain. While significant advances in treatment are helping people live longer and better with the disease, metastatic breast cancer remains incurable and requires ongoing treatment and support.

Until now, Australia lacked comprehensive national data on metastatic breast cancer, making it difficult to fully understand the scale of the disease and the needs of those living with it. Previous estimates suggested around 10,600 Australians were living with MBC, however the new national data indicates the number is substantially higher.

For the first time, Australia has a clearer picture of how many people are living with metastatic breast cancer (MBC), marking a significant milestone for patients, researchers, clinicians and advocacy organisations across the country.

The release of these figures is more than just a statistic. Better data means better planning for healthcare services, more informed policy decisions, improved research opportunities, and stronger advocacy for patients and families affected by metastatic disease. It also ensures that people living with MBC are more visible within Australia’s healthcare system and that their experiences are recognised and understood.
