2025 Impact

Dedicated to breast cancer research, free support services, and education programs for patients and families.

Over the past 12 months, we have had the privilege of supporting more than 2,000 people affected by breast cancer from across Western Australia. Many have travelled hundreds of kilometres from regional and remote communities to access the specialist care, clinical expertise and compassionate support they deserve.

In 2025 our patient community spanned generations, from 18 to 106 years of age. While the majority of those we support are women, we are equally honoured to care for men diagnosed with breast cancer, recognising that this disease touches people from all walks of life.

Behind every referral is a person, a family and a story. It is a privilege to stand beside our patients through some of life’s most challenging moments, providing not only expert care, but reassurance, connection and hope. This is only possible because of the generosity of our supporters, volunteers, partners and community, and for that, we extend our thanks.

Every day, we are reminded why our work matters through the incredible people who walk through our doors.

Support and Education Programs

PYNKS – Metastatic Womens Support Group

Metastatic breast cancer, also known as secondary or advanced breast cancer, is when cancer has spread from the breast to other parts of the body. Our metastatic patients can choose to meet monthly at Kings Park over coffee, attend educational workshops and fun activities like laughing yoga, candle making and many more. With the facilitation of the Metastatic Breast Care Nurse, the group fosters emotional well-being, social connections, and a sense of camaraderie and resilience among those facing the unique challenges of metastatic diagnosis and treatment.

Research

Since 2009, when the Breast Cancer Trials Unit (BCTU) became part of Breast Cancer Research Centre WA, we have remained committed to advancing breast cancer care through world-class clinical research.

Our clinical trials continue to drive the development of next-generation cancer treatments, ensuring our patients have access to the most advanced and effective therapies available.

Advancing Breast Cancer Treatment

Through our clinical trials program, we continue to provide patients with access to pioneering treatments, emerging therapies and innovative approaches that may not otherwise be available in Western Australia. Each trial represents a step forward in our understanding of breast cancer and offers renewed hope to patients and families facing this disease.

In 2025, our research team continued to make significant contributions to global breast cancer research, supporting the delivery of groundbreaking trials and expanding access to new treatment options. From early-stage investigations to advanced therapies, our work ensures Western Australian patients can be part of the discoveries shaping the future of breast cancer care.

ASCO 2025 Feature

We are proud that the PATINA clinical trial, a major international study in which BCRC‑WA participated, was highlighted at the 2025 ASCO Breast Cancer Symposium. The trial focused on people living with hormone receptor‑positive, HER2‑positive metastatic breast cancer whose disease had not progressed after initial treatment. It evaluated whether adding the CDK4/6 inhibitor palbociclib to standard HER2‑targeted therapy and endocrine therapy could improve outcomes.

The results were practice‑changing: adding palbociclib extended median progression‑free survival by an impressive 15 months, from 29 to 44 months, and also showed a reduced risk of cancer spreading to the brain. This significant advance addresses a key gap in care and is expected to influence future treatment approaches and guidelines, underscoring the vital role of clinical trials and the patients who take part in them.

Clinical Trials

Our dedicated BCTU plays a vital role in shaping the future of breast cancer care. Through participation in national and international trials, we help evaluate new and existing treatments, reduce side effects, and better understand the physical, emotional, and social impacts of breast cancer.

ASCENT 03 Trial | Trodelvy Positioned as a Potential New First-Line Treatment for Metastatic Triple-Negative Breast Cancer

The ASCENT-03 study delivered encouraging results for people with metastatic triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) who are not eligible for immunotherapy.

Trodelvy (sacituzumab govitecan-hziy):

  • Improved progression-free survival by three months compared with standard chemotherapy
  • Marked a meaningful improvement published in The New England Journal of Medicine

NATALEE Trial | Reducing Recurrence Risk in Early Stage Breast Cancer

A major step forward for hormone receptor positive (HR+) HER2 negative breast cancer. This study showed that adding ribociclib to an aromatase inhibitor significantly reduced recurrence, with the benefits continuing even after treatment stopped.

It was well tolerated and effective across all age groups and menopausal statuses, offering renewed hope for early stage patients.

A Year full of record breaking achievments and fundraising events

This year has been defined by extraordinary community support and record-breaking fundraising achievements. From the success of our PRC mammogram campaigns to our inaugural Golf Day, and a standout year at HBF Run for a Reason, the momentum behind our mission has never been stronger. Events like the Sea Gals Topless Dip and Paddle for a Purpose raising over $10,000, and the continued impact of our annual fundraisers, including Hash Harriers Rockingham Pink run, WA Zumba Party in Pink and High Tea with Heart have brought communities together in incredible ways.

We’ve also welcomed new fundraisers, swimmers, and supporters from across the state, from Koolan Island to Esperance, from Swanbourne to Gosnells, each playing a vital role in driving our cause forward. Every event attended, every dollar raised, and every conversation shared has strengthened patient care, and brought hope to so many individuals and families across Western Australia.

This impact wouldn’t be possible without the dedication of our fundraisers and the generosity of our donors.
