A letter from the CEO, Carmelo Arto
As the world faces unprecedented times, I am writing to you in the most trying and difficult circumstances for Australians amid the current Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
I reassure you that Breast Cancer Research Centre-WA will stand firm and continue to provide our world-class treatment and support services to the many women and men currently undergoing treatment for or living with breast cancer.
Our patient, Maureen shares her story on living with Metastatic Breast Cancer for seven years and the recent adjustments she has made during COVID-19. This is a story about hope and the belief that we are stronger together.
“I am a mum to three daughters aged 16, 11 and 9 and a wife to Karl. Seven years ago, I was diagnosed with Metastatic Breast Cancer and have undergone 3 weekly treatments ever since, plus ongoing scans, operations etc. Since my diagnosis I’ve implemented lots of changes including eating healthier, taking it quietly after treatment days but also living as normal a life as possible with my beautiful family. Since the Coronavirus outbreak, I’m taking appropriate precautions like being mindful of people around me with my suppressed immunity and self-isolating. I have a full-time job with local government, and I was recently instructed to work from home by my GP.
I believe we must never give up hope and to not let a diagnosis like cancer consume our lives. Keep living because there is a lot of life to be lived.
I’ve been living with the uncertainty of life for a long time and know the importance of listening to my doctor and health professionals. I’m extremely fortunate that I was referred to Dr Peter Willsher and Prof Arlene Chan and I know that I would not be alive if it was otherwise. They both continue to demonstrate their willingness to go above and beyond caring for me and for that my family and I are extremely grateful.” – Maureen Keegan.
Breast Cancer Research Centre-WA will continue to work towards reshaping the future of breast cancer treatment and support services for patients like Maureen. Nothing is more important than the safety and wellbeing of all those we help and work with. We will be here to stand alongside our patients, friends and families.
